One great reason to get up and out after lockdown: the Colchester Orbital Online Map goes live!

Colchester Orbital Online Map: https://colchesterorbital.org

Working with Walk Colchester and Colchester Borough Council, we are delighted to announce the launch this week of the Colchester Orbital online map, a digital map built by SmartNE, bringing this fantastic project (and our beautiful countryside) to life at your fingertips.

The map enables users to display and interact with walk/cycle routes in the context of multiple additional layers of environmental and heritage information, and to find practical information about connecting transport options and other facilities. Together they enable map users to advance plan trips out, to get involved in local green/community activities, or to simply discover and enjoy local landscapes anew from the comfort of home.

From the team's perspective at SmartNE, it has been a pleasure working on this local, collaborative project, alongside the Borough Council who have generously funded it, and local community members responsible for its early conception and development; especially so at such an important time, when accessing green space and finding ways to enable and encourage walking and cycling is more vital than ever.

Note, although the map is currently web-based only, PDF versions of the six Orbital walk sections (East, South and West, A and B routes), plus the cycle route, with full colour maps and route guidance, are available via mobiles.

As if not reason enough to celebrate, we also launch alongside the Orbital today, its 'sister', the Myland Community Map...

Myland Community Map: https://mylandcommunitymap.org

In harmony with the Orbital, and partly because the Orbital route travels through Myland in the northwest, Myland Community Council has taken the opportunity to commission over the same period, the development of the Myland Community Map, celebrating the Parish’s local green environment and heritage, and providing a platform for publicising local activities and community information.

Like the Orbital map, the Myland map will continue to build with SmartNE's support. Community members are encouraged to be in touch with details of projects they would like to be represented, or to be otherwise in the map's progress in other ways. Please email: communitymap@mylandcommunitycouncil.gov.uk

We hope you enjoy the maps and we welcome expressions of interest from other local areas keen to find new ways of visualising their green space and walk/cycle opportunities - please be in touch!
