Delivering location-based services to staff, students and visitors

With a total site area of 110 hectares and more than 200 buildings, the size and complexity of the estate has a significant impact on first impressions, especially when it comes to navigating from A to B...

Over the last 12 months, working in partnership with the University of Birmingham, we have developed a smart solution that is transforming the way people at the University navigate around the campus.

The solution has been designed to help students, staff and visitors navigate their way easily around the University's Edgbaston and Selly Oak campuses. It provides them with consolidated information from multiple on-line sources which users can view via three communications channels: web, mobile app and kiosk. The app versions are freely available to mobile users from Apple and Google stores, whilst those at Edgbaston can also view the maps and supporting information on eight touchscreen kiosks, which are sited around the newly completed ‘Green Heart’ space at the centre of the campus.

In addition to showing building-to-building navigation, the interactive map displays study space locations with dynamic icons that indicate the least congested PC and study spaces. Opening times for shops, services, and university events are easily found via the map, while bus stop and bus times information helps students and visitors plan their trips to and from the campus. The solution also enables the Estates and Marketing departments to control kiosk displays, push notifications to users and to control navigation options, with the potential for much more.

Interactive Totems

As part of the University's Green Heart development, ten 65-inch touchscreens built into custom-designed totems were installed by one of our hardware partners xSign

The WAi2Go signage player within the totems allows management of the totem and full control over the content.

Detailed analytics give a breakdown of how the totem is being used and the most popular search items.

An accessibility button lowers all controls to be more easily accessible to wheelchair users, and automatically offers level access and step-free routes when getting directions.

Managing the Platform

Based on an administrator's roles and access rights, particular administrative functions are made available through a cloud-based dashboard.

This is where the totems are managed from and the number of Smartphone installations monitored. The dashboard also enables the content for site locations, information articles and push notifications to be created.
